The work “More Porn” was created as part of the group exhibition “Borrowed Flowers.” The overall concept of the show was to comment on or refer to an already existing artwork by another artist. With this sculpture, I reference Marc Bijl’s work “Porn,” which can be understood as a comment on Robert Indiana’s piece “Love.” By choosing this specific work, I wanted to underline the fact that making art always happens within a certain context, meaning that every piece is, in one way or another, informed by other artists. I consider this a very legitimate way of working.
By reinterpreting the pop-cultural symbol of the Barbie doll, which propagates a highly distorted and, above all, unrealistic female body image, I aim to highlight the multifaceted and problematic symbolism of Barbie. For this reason, I depict the Barbie dolls within my sculpture as a soldier, murderer, rapist, slave, refugee, and victim. The arrangement of the dolls is not random; it opens up a whole world of situations revolving around themes of consumer addiction, violence, war, and sex.
